Project-Nerd Publishing Takes a New Approach to the Superhero Genre

December 14, 2016 – Denver, Colorado — Project-Nerd Publishing is set to release a series of one-shots through 2017 and 2018 focusing on a specific set of heroes.

Debuting in February 2017 with a one-shot titled Blaze, the series of comics follows a group of characters in Capital City that are as complex as they are powerful. Blaze is joined by fellow superheroes Lady Fox and Shock, who are a crime-fighting couple, in his every day battle to take on villains as well as his mental illness.

Blaze is written by Project-Nerd Publishing founder, Iggy Michniacki, and will feature the art of newcomer Mario Alberto Diaz Guerra. The issue will focus heavily on Blaze’s mental well-being, but will do so in a way that it doesn’t detract from an entertaining and complete story.

“I want to take a look at superheroes as we know them and introduce real issues that people deal with today,” noted Michniacki. “Depression is something millions of people suffer with and are often too quiet about because it still can be considered a taboo topic.”

Depression is a common but serious mood disorder. More than 3 million people are diagnosed with it each year and it is often not discussed openly because of the stigmas it still carries.

Depending on the success of the Blaze one-shot, Lady Fox and Shock are expected to get their own one-shot later this year focusing on a variety of other issues, including racism. The creative team for that one-shot has not yet been determined.

“This isn’t your All-American tale with no darkness or issues,” Michniacki added. “I want this universe to focus on reality. If superheroes were real, it’s highly likely that these heroes would deal with matters such as depression, racism, and sexism among many other ‘isms’ we still need to address in society.”

Blaze joins a diverse slate of content set to debut in 2017 from Project-Nerd Publishing, helping refocus and relaunch the brands titles in goals in year two. Although Blaze will be available in early 2017, it is expected to be reprinted for later shows due to the important nature of the content.
